Depression Q & A

What is depression?

Depression, or major depression, is a mood disorder that alters how you feel, think, behave, and manage daily responsibilities. There are other forms of depression that develop under various circumstances but cause similar symptoms, including:

  • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
  • Postpartum depression
  • Persistent depressive disorder
  • Psychotic depression

Depression is very common and develops from a combination of factors, including genetic, environmental, and psychological. You can develop depression at any age, though it’s more common in adults.

Depression can also co-occur with other serious health issues, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Depression symptoms vary and generally last most of the day for two or more weeks. Common depression symptoms include:

  • Ongoing feelings of sadness or emptiness
  • Irritability
  • Pessimism
  • Low energy
  • Change in appetite
  • Feelings of guilt or shame
  • Anxiety
  • Disinterest in activities
  • Withdrawal from friends and loved ones
  • Thoughts of suicide or death
  • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping more than usual
  • Unexplained aches and pains

Some people with depression experience only a few of these symptoms, while others experience them all. The severity and frequency of symptoms depend on many factors, including the depth or stage of your depression.

How is depression treated?

Depression is treatable, even in the most severe cases. Treatment is typically more effective when initiated early. Treatment for depression may include:

Medications

Many people with depression benefit from antidepressants. These medications work by improving how your brain uses the neurotransmitters that control mood and stress. It’s important to note that antidepressants take up to four weeks to work, and finding the proper medication to manage your mental health condition takes time.

You don’t have to take antidepressants for the rest of your life. However, you should never abruptly stop taking antidepressants because they can cause withdrawal symptoms.

James can help you taper your antidepressant when appropriate.

Psychotherapy

In addition to medication, people with depression also benefit from psychotherapy. Many types of psychotherapy improve depression, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and problem-solving therapy.

James offers telemedicine appointments for people with depression who are running out of their antidepressants. He also provides therapy for depression when needed.
